The RAK Free Trade Zone started in the year 2000. After the successful launch of RAK FTZ, the government of the Northern Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah formed a second free zone called RAKIA (Ras Al Khaimah Investment Authority) in 2005. In 2017, the government merged the two into the RAK Economic Zone (RAKEZ).
The newly formed RAKEZ offers more services than either of the predecessor free zones on their own.
